CV Hints & Tips

First impressions matter!

First impressions, matter; if your CV does not attract the reader’s attention in the first 30 seconds then your chances of obtaining an interview are greatly reduced. Make sure that your CV is concise and to the point. Using bullet points to list your main duties and achievements in a role can make it easier for employers who are skim reading for particular information to find what they are looking for.

Experience comes first!

Make sure that your work experience is at the start of your CV not your education details (unless you have just left education). Your work experience should be listed in order of most recent first. You don’t have to give your reasons for leaving a position and you shouldn’t include your salary information unless the employer has specifically asked you to do so.

Why should you be invited to the interview?

What your CV really needs to show is why you should be invited for interview. A list of all your major achievements can attract an employer to invite you to interview but be careful not to exaggerate these achievements as you may be asked to back them up in an interview. When listing your major achievements try to keep this to a list of no more than the 5 most relevant to the position you have applied for.

The visual layout of your CV is also very important. Do not use illustrations or fancy borders as this will only detract from the information you have supplied.

Keep your details up-to date!

You must ensure that you have up to date contact information on your CV. This should include your home address, email address and telephone number, if the employer cannot get hold of you, whether to ask for further information or to invite you to interview then your CV may be passed over for someone who is contactable. It could be advantageous to include that you have a full driving licence, the employer may be looking for a car driver and not wish to waste time contacting candidates for potential interview to find out if they drive.

Do not put a picture on your CV the only people who should include these are models, actors, actresses and possibly cabin crew.

Remember to send a cover letter

You should always send a covering letter along with your CV. In this you should refer to the advert for the position, (or if not from an ad where you learnt about the vacancy) and why you are applying for the position. You should pick out some main points from your CV highlighting why you should be considered for the role.

Always spell check!

Finally always spell check and proof read your CV before sending it to any potential employers. Ensure that your CV makes grammatical sense and says everything you want it to.
